Lameness Examination

A lameness exam is a multi-step process to determine the root cause of your horse’s pain.

Changes in your horse’s gait or stance could be attributed to lameness. Lameness can create pain in the limbs, affecting their trot. Our veterinary team can assess your horse to determine the specific condition connected to their lameness, including a neurological imbalance or pain. What is a lameness exam?

During a lameness exam, we perform a series of tests to determine the source of the pain in your horse’s limb as well as how to effectively treat it. Our goal is to alleviate the pain in their joints, bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments, which cause mobility and performance issues. One of the first steps in the evaluation is to assess your horse’s medical history, including any previous injuries. Other procedures in the exam include:

  • Determining irregularities in their gait
  • Using a hoof tester
  • Taking X-rays of the affected areas (in clinic only)
  • Performing flexion tests to assess joint pain levels
